August 2023: The Pain Lab is awarded its second NIH grant!
Our second NIH grant titled 'Developing multitarget enzyme inhibitors as safe and effective anti-migraine treatments' is awarded (R16 GM150781)! We will spend the next four years examining the extent to which dual inhibitors of FAAH and sEH alleviate migraine pain and produce reward in animal models. Like before, this work is in collaboration with Dr. Stevan Pecic at California State University, Fullerton.

Our first NIH grant titled 'Designed Multiple Ligands as Non-opioid Analgesics for Treating Chronic Pain' is awarded (R16 GM149204)! We will spend the next four years examining the extent to which dual inhibitors of FAAH and sEH alleviate inflammatory pain. This work is in collaboration with Dr. Stevan Pecic at California State University, Fullerton.
May 2023: Cassandra wins first place for Best Poster in the Division for Drug Discovery and Development at the 2023 American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics meeting in St. Louis!

Ashley and Cassandra co-presented their work at the annual American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics meeting in St. Louis, MO.
We also used this opportunity to meet our collaborator, Dr. Stevan Pecic, and his students, Jeannes Angelia and Ryan West, from the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Cal State Fullerton. Most importantly, Cassandra presented her work to six different judges and brought home the lab's first in-person poster award - a first-place finish for Best Undergraduate Poster in the Division for Drug Discovery and Development. May 2023: Alexis is accepted to the Bay Area RaMP program in Microbiome Sciences!
Alexis will spend next year studying the interaction of the microbiome with various aspects of physiology. Congratulations, Alexis!

Ashley will be continuing her education at Washington State University to pursue her PhD in Prevention Science while Cassandra and Alexis will stick around the Bay Area to further enhance their research skills!
April 2023: Alexis is accepted to the ASPIRES program at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory!
Alexis will be spending the summer studying how distributed reactions work together and designing experiments to study delicate molecules such as proteins. Congratulations, Alexis!
April 2023: Chris is placed into the STAR program housed at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo!
For the second straight year, Chris will be spending Summer 2023 working in the lab and simultaneously developing skills and materials to translate discoveries in the lab into effective teaching practices. Congratulations, Chris!
April 2023: Ashley and Cassandra present at the 2023 Cal State East Bay Student Research Showcase and the CSU Student Research Competition in San Diego

Cal State East Bay held its first in-person Student Research Showcase since the pandemic. The Showcase consisted of oral presentations, posters, and informal networking. Ashley and Cassandra presented their work on pain relief produced by dual FAAH/sEH inhibitors.
Ashley and Cassandra also presented this work at the CSU Student Research Competition hosted by San Diego State University. |
